Medications

In appropriate individuals bariatric physicians often use weight loss medications during treatment. Weight loss medications include:

phentermine (adipex)

sibutramine (meridia)

orlistat (xenical)

topirimate (topamax)

5HT/Carbidopa

dietthylpropion (tenuate)

phendimetrazine (bontril)

The American Society of Bariatric Physicians feels that use of weight loss medications for extended periods of time is not only safe but more effective. Keep in mind that any medication can be potentially harmful, and therefore your physician will evaluate the risk of your weight as compared to the risk of the medication when deciding if it is right for you. Your doctor will discuss with you which medication (if any) is best for you.

Meal Replacements/Very Low Calorie Diets

MindBody bariatrics generally does not support the use of diets and very low calorie meal replacements since a high percentage of patients regain weight following the end of the diet. There are certain cases (such as urgent imminent surgery) where your physician and psychologist may feel a drastic intervention is beneficial.

Supplements

MindBody Bariatrics does not reccomend the same supplements to all of their clients and advise people individually. We do not believe there is a supplement on the market that directly achieves effective weight loss. Some common supplements used are:

Vitamin Supplements

Protein Supplements

Meal/Snack Supplements
